Spring Into April: Can’t-Miss Events in the Willmar Lakes Area

April in the Willmar Lakes Area is that sweet spot where spring starts to stretch its legs, the community comes alive, and your calendar suddenly fills up (in the best way possible). Whether you’re here for live entertainment, family-friendly adventures, or a night out with friends, there’s something happening around every corner this month. Let’s dive into what April has in store!

Kick Off April with Excitement

Giddy up—April starts strong with Night of the Horse on April 3 at Smilin’ D Arena & Events. This unforgettable showcase celebrates the beauty, strength, and skill of these majestic animals. From draft teams and working cowhorses to barrel racing and mounted shooting, it’s a high-energy event that horse lovers (and anyone who appreciates a great show) won’t want to miss.

Sip, Laugh & Celebrate

On April 9, grab your friends and head out for Brew Ha-Ha 2026—a lively evening filled with drinks, delicious appetizers, and dueling pianos bringing the entertainment. It’s the perfect excuse to unwind, laugh a little louder, and maybe even win big in the raffle!

A Little Drama (and a Lot of Laughs)

Looking for a night at the theater? The Barn Theatre presents Beating A Dead Horse April 9–12 and 16–19. This hilarious comedy follows two brothers trying to save their struggling pet funeral home—with the help of a very wealthy woman and her not-quite-departed racehorse. It’s quirky, clever, and guaranteed to leave you chuckling.

Home Inspiration + Family Fun

Mark your calendar for April 10–11 and explore the Home & Outdoor Living Expo at the Willmar Civic Center. Whether you’re dreaming up your next renovation, planning your summer landscaping, or just love browsing creative ideas, this expo has it all. Bonus: bring the kids along for photos with a Minion and a chance to win prizes!

Music That Moves You

April is packed with opportunities to enjoy incredible live music:

Celebrate, Explore & Give Back

April 18 is a big day for getting outdoors and connecting with the community at the Earth Day Celebration at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center. Expect hands-on activities, nature exploration, and even live special presentations with Hemker Zoo—perfect for curious minds of all ages.

Then on April 24, experience the vibrant cultures that make our community unique at the International Heritage Festival. This FREE event features music, dance, food, and stories from around the world—all right here in the Willmar Lakes Area.

Family Fun & Unique Events

Looking for something the kids will love? The Youth Fishing Clinic on April 25 at the Willmar Civic Center is a fantastic (and free!) way for young anglers to learn new skills—from casting to knot tying.

That same day, raise a glass at Bockfest at Intuition Brewing, a brand-new street celebration supporting the Willmar Community Closet. Great brews, great cause—what more could you ask for?

And don’t forget the Hoedown for House Lights on April 23 at The Barn Theatre—a fun-filled fundraiser to brighten up the stage (literally!).

Ongoing Fun All Month Long

The excitement doesn’t stop there! Throughout April, you’ll find:

  • Karaoke nights at local bars
  • Trivia nights at area breweries
  • Live music at restaurants and venues across the region

Be sure to check the Events Calendar often—new events are being added all the time
