Fishing Report for 5-20-26

The start to the game fish season has been a bit slower than usual for walleye anglers, likely due to inconsistent weather patterns and windy conditions since opening weekend. However, anglers are still finding success on several area lakes, including Big Kandiyohi, south Long Lake, and Norway Lake. Early season walleyes have been more active in shallower water — generally less than 12 feet deep — with live bait producing better results than artificial presentations so far.

Northern pike activity has been much more consistent, with eager fish being caught across many area lakes, including Florida and Diamond lakes. Bass anglers have also been enjoying strong action throughout Kandiyohi County, with bass season already underway since ice-out earlier this spring.

Panfish action should continue to improve as water temperatures warm. Crappies and sunfish are beginning to move into the shallows in preparation for the spawn, creating great opportunities for anglers looking to fill the boat with steady bites.

With warmer and more stable weather expected later this week and into next, fishing conditions across the Willmar Lakes Area are expected to improve and should help jump-start the bite on many local lakes.
