Sunburg Community Music Camp 2025
June 3-6, 2025 from 2-6pm
at Hope Lutheran Church and the Sunburg Community Center

Sunburg Community Music is sponsoring a free summer camp, June 3-6 (2 – 6 pm) at Hope Lutheran Church and the Sunburg Community Center.
There will be a concluding program for the community on Sunday, June 8 at 4 pm at Hope Lutheran Church in Sunburg.

Pre-registration is required. Space is limited and registrations will be confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis. Contact Darlene Schroeder at 3dschroeder@gmail.com or text/call 320 212 2050. Children 12 and under must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. Campers are expected to attend each day in order to build skills and gain confidence in their playing.

Workshops will include: guitar, ukulele, mandolin, fiddle (violin), upright bass, Irish whistle and singing. A limited number of instruments are available on loan at no cost.

A new offering this year is a class designed for younger children that will focus on rhythm, movement and singing. This class will run from 3:30 – 6 pm. Kids must be self-sufficient in toileting and have an adult present, as necessary, for supervision.

“Strum & Sing” again be offered at the camp. Taught by Joyce Rudningen, participants will learn to strum basic chords on ukuleles as they sing along from a community song book! A limited number of ukuleles are available on loan at no cost.

Special guest instructors are Dempsey Schroeder and Maggie Harp. Schroeder is well-known fiddler originally from the Pennock area. Dempsey is also accomplished on the upright bass, mandolin and guitar. He also composes and records original music. Maggie Harp is a former music teacher at BBE and is currently the music director of Hope Presbyterian Church in Spicer. She is an outstanding accompanist on guitar and keyboard, often playing by ear. She and Dempsey have played together for over 15 years. Additional instructors include Sophie Haase, Nathan Hulstrand, Nancy Aasen and Darlene Schroeder.

This is an intergenerational camp. People of all ages are encouraged to attend. Parents and grandparents are strongly encouraged to learn instruments along with their children. This changes the focus from “You need to practice” to “Let’s Go Play!”

The Sunburg Community Music Program brings together people of all ages to make music in community. Our only rule is, “To Have Fun!” There is no cost or charge for any of our programs.

This camp is funded in part with a grant from the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council made possible by the voters of Minnesota, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
