Fishing Report for 1-7-20

Anglers are finally getting out on the lakes in the area by walking, 4-wheelers and ATVs. The ice thickness varies greatly throughout a lake so caution should be taken when heading out. Green Lake varies from about 10-14 inches of ice with crappie and walleye being caught most often in the evenings. Foot Lake can vary anywhere from 8 to 12 inches with crappie being more active near the pier by the fairgrounds in the evening hours and the walleye near the aerators. Diamond Lake has been good for those looking for crappie, but only has, at the thickest, 8-10 inches of ice. Point and Eagle lakes are very popular right now with about 12 inches of ice and active walleye and panfish. Big Kandiyohi Lake has anywhere from 8-12 inches of ice with jumbo perch being the most popular catch in the mornings. Minnetaga and Elizabeth lakes have been very good for active walleye, however Lake Elizabeth is one of the most unpredictable lakes as far as ice depths. There’s been reports of only 5 inches in one spot and up to 12 inches in another. Anglers are having the most success with fathead minnows for walleye and wax worms for the other species of fish. Please note that walleye are more likely to bite when there’s a lot of movement with the bait. Before heading out, anglers should consult with a local bait shop for the most current ice conditions. We recommend stopping at Runnings in Willmar for bait, tackle and the most up-to-date fishing report.
