Fishing Report for 5-16-17
This year’s fishing opener proved to be an excellent one for anglers in the Willmar Lakes Area! Many walleye were pulled from lakes south of Willmar including Big Kandiyohi, Wagonga, Elizabeth, Minnetaga and Lake Lillian. Walleye are generally more active in 8-20 feet of water. Trolling the shallows after sunset or pulling crankbaits along the tops of the drop-offs has been the best approach. Those that tried the lakes north of Willmar caught more crappie, sunfish and bass. Those lakes that had very active panfish include Eagle, Diamond, Green, South Long, Florida and Lake Andrew. A small jig tipped with a minnow or wax worm has proven to work well in the shallows. Water temperatures on most lakes were around 60 degrees over the weekend, but may lower a bit after this cool down that is forecasted.
