Top Events to Enjoy this May in Kandiyohi County

May is here and everyone is eagerly awaiting sunshine, warmer temps, and a colorful landscape! Kids are already talking about the last day of school, college students are studying for finals, and families are making summer plans! Make sure you check out all of the fun events and activities taking place this month and mark your favorites on your calendar!

Here are some of the unique events taking place in May in the Willmar Lakes Area:
May 3 – West Central Concert Series Presents How Sweet Is It
Don’t miss this performance by Nashville-based Steve Leslie, an awarded singer/songwriter/guitarist. In “How Sweet It Is!” Steve Leslie performs the music of one of his greatest influences, James Taylor, in an authentic and spellbinding concert event. Steve’s warm baritone and exceptional guitar technique will have audiences singing along to James Taylor’s incredible catalog of songs. Tickets are available at the door.

May 4-6 – AAUW Willmar Used Book Sale
Looking for a good book to read? Then make sure you check out the AAUW (American Association of University Women) annual book sale May 4-6 at the Willmar Community Center. All books are $1.00! Proceeds from the book sale fund two local scholarships, Willmar Senior High graduate Scholarship and Ridgewater College Scholarship, and national post-graduate degree scholarships.

May 6 – Willmar’s Spring Craft Festival
Join us in Willmar for this wonderful spring craft festival! Just in time for Mother’s Day! Treat yourself with a day of shopping over 100 of Minnesota’s best crafters, artisans, boutiques, and vendors!! With Mother’s Day and warmer weather on the horizon, you’re not going to want to miss this show.

May 6 – MACCRAY NHS 5K Walk/Run
Maccray National Honor Society is hosting a 5K Walk/Run to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation of MN in memory of MACCRAY Class of 2021 graduate Hailey Berghuis, who had Epilepsy and passed away earlier this year. All MACCRAY students, staff, families, and the overall community are invited to participate in this walk/run to help support this great cause. While in town, make sure to checkout the City-Wide Garage Sale, Apol’s Harley-Davidson Annual Hog Roast, Homemade Pie & Coffee at the Raymond Community Center, and enjoy a night of live music by the Dam Jammers at Cheers.

May 11-13 – Spring Into Summer Event
Enjoy three days of specials, discounts and drawings during this annual shopping event at various businesses in New London. Check out the various New London Businesses Facebook pages for more details.

May 12-14 – 530 Farm Girls Spring Sale
It’s a great weekend to check out the many fun vintage finds during the Annual 530 Farm Girls Sale! Check out their Facebook page to see sneak peeks of items that’ll be at the sale!

May 17 – Cruise Night at the Country Stop
Come see 50 to 100 classic cars and hot rods that are displayed for everyone’s enjoyment. Enjoy an A&W Burger Basket special, live music by CJ Dafoe and door prizes. Fun for the whole family!!

May 19 – 2nd Annual Raymond Ambulance Big Cup Tourney
Mark your calendars for our 2nd annual Raymond Ambulance Big Cup Golf Tourney at Hawk Creek Country Club! The oversized big cups at each hole make for a unique and fun evening for all ages and experience levels. We’ll have door prizes and a 50/50 cash drawing. All proceeds from this event will go towards buying a much needed new ambulance rig. Excited to see you there!

May 20 – Creekside Greenhouses Maker’s Market
Besides the flowers in the greenhouses we will spend the day with several local vendors selling items that are their own creations, you don’t want to miss this!

May 20 – Cinco de Mayo: Festival Latinos
Join the fun on Saturday, May 20th on 4th Street in Downtown Willmar for an evening of live music, food, Vendors, dancing and kids activities. Los Lobos Norteños will be coming back and playing all of your favorites!

May 20 – Catwalk Party at the Little Theatre Auditorium
Catwalk Party is a counter culture performance art and social event! Drag performers will strut their stuff with lights, music, Auditorium Bar specialty cocktails, and fun! Join us for an unforgettable evening!

May 21 – 2023 Young Artists Concert
The Willmar Area Symphonic Orchestra is celebrating their 65th Anniversary season! Join the celebration on Sunday, May 21st at the Young Artists Concert featuring Cecilia Buzzeo and Jacob Loerzel. They’ve also invited all past WASO members to join them at the May concert to play the Rosamunde Overture by Schubert. It’s going to be a pretty spectacular show…don’t miss it!

May 21 – 18th Annual Sunburg Syttende Mai Celebration
Join the town of Sunburg as they celebrate their 18th Annual Syttende Mai Celebration! Come for the tractor pull, quilt raffle, boutique at the Community Center, Sunburg Trolls Car Club Car Display, Sunburg Lakers Baseball Game, Grande Day Parade and more!

May 25 – KRA Speedway Racing Season Opener
Enjoy a night of racing action around the 3/8 mile semi-banked dirt track located on the south side of the historic Kandiyohi County Fairgrounds in Willmar. Watching mudslinging racing at KRA Speedway is a great way to spend your Thursday nights in the summer with family and friends!!!

May 27 – Memorial Day – Law Day 5K
Participate in the annual Memorial Day – Law Day 5K Run/Walk that starts at the Flags of Honor Memorial Park in Willmar and then winds you through Robbins Island Regionals Park. Take advantage of this early morning exercise opporunity that’ll have you enjoying the scenic views and beautiful natural landscape of Robbins Island Regional Park.

May 31 – Willmar Stingers Home Opener
The Willmar Stingers Home Opener against the Eau Claire Express takes place May 31st! Enjoy great stadium food and drinks while watching some exciting Northwoods League Baseball. After the home opener stay for some Post-Game Fireworks!
