Trail Conditions
1-6-2012
Still waiting for Mother Nature to bring us some winter weather! We have little to no snow at this point. But the warm temperatures makes it comfortable for you to hike any of the local trails!
10-5-2011 Sibley State Park Fall Colors
The peak fall color is happening now at Sibley and the surrounding area, with most color provided by ash, burr oak, elm, poplar and maple trees. Red oak is beginning to turn colorful as well, so there is a mix of yellows, reds and bronze in wooded areas. In addition, prairies are an added bonus with grass and forbs at, or just past peak. Waterfowl can be seen migrating through the area, with the wood ducks being active in the early mornings and at dusk. There are even a few monarch butterflies sticking around with the unseasonable warm weather.
9-28-2011 - Sibley State Park Fall Colors
Colors are changing and becoming better daily. Some tree types are at their peak, such as ash and basswood. Burr oaks are close to their peak bronze color that is beautiful, but fleeting...Many trees are within a week of peak, so there will be a great show of color for the next week or two at Sibley. Prairie areas are places of wonder this time of year, with native grasses aglow in the morning and late afternoon sunlight. Wildflowers are getting tougher to find, the asters are quite colorful now.
9-23-2011 - Sibley State Park
The Trees are starting to turn brilliant colors of red, gold, and orange. To experience the beautiful fall weather head out to Sibley State Park to walk the trails and hike or drive to Mount Tom for an incredible view! For an enjoyable auto tour, drive the Glacial Ridge Trail, a Minnesota Scenic Byway, which takes you through Sibley as well as the surrounding countryside. Sibley State Park offers a variety of activities and programs for the whole family to enjoy.
9-15-2011
Fall is slowly creeping up on us. The weather is gorgeous right now and it's painting the leaves into beautiful fall colors. There is still plenty of time to enjoy a long hike or bike trip along the trails!
5-5-2011
The weather has finally turned beautiful, and the trails are coming to life. It's time to dust off your hiking shoes, bikes, and rollerblades and head out on to the trails! The scenery will continue to change over these next few weeks as the trees and flowers begin to bloom. Take in all that the Willmar Lakes Area has to offer!
4-2-2011 Sibley State Park
Sibley ski trails and snowmobile trails are closed for the season, and are open to hiking at this point. Hikers should use caution, as there will be icy patches on north facing slopes for the immediate future. With the arrival of spring, migratory birds have been visiting Sibley, such as geese, wood ducks, robins, redwing blackbirds and bluebirds. Maple sap is beginning to run, and the prairie hilltops are already bare of snow.
3-21-2011 Sibley State Park
Sibley ski trails and snowmobile trails are pretty much done for. There is a bit of snow left, but with the higher temps and bare spots, skiing is all but over for this ski season. With the first day of spring here, migratory birds have been visiting Sibley, such as geese, wood ducks, robins redwing blackbirds and bluebirds. Maple sap is beginning to run, and the prairie hilltops are already bare of snow.
3-21-2011 Glacial Lakes State Trail
The trail is now closed to snowmobilers. With the warmer weather and rain that we recently received, the trail base is nearly gone. Though it may be sad for the snow to disappear, that means hiking and biking is just around the corner!
3-17-2011 Glacial Lakes State Trail
Due to the warming weather, the trails have been deteriorating quickly. The groomers have reported poor conditions with bare spots showing in open areas.
