Settlers in the northern part of what is now Kandiyohi County fled to the Isle of Refuge when they heard of the trouble with the Dakota. Many were fortunate and escaped to the island on Norway Lake. The settlers lived for days on only the meager supplies they were able to bring with them. They were rescued by relief parties and escorted to eastern settlements.

Where: This marker stands in Norway Lake Lutheran Church churchyard ten miles west of New London on Kandiyohi County No. 40. The Isle of Refuge, which belongs to the County, lies to the northeast of the church, across an arm of the lake.
